I just upgraded the blog to the latest version of Wordpress.
Everything seems fine. Until I’m sure that Akismet is catching spam, I’ve closed comments on posts that are 7 days old. Once I see Akismet working, I’ll relax that to the normal 21 days.
Comments seem to be working.
I might not put back all the former […]
The ongoing battle against comment spam continues.
My beloved SpamKarma2 found something missing (or something that it didn’t like), and told me to tell my host to fix some techie setting. … Ha! Fat chance.
Just using Akismet, it let a lot of spam comments through. It stopped a lot, but let through 1 or 2 […]
Sorry for the intermittent availability.
It seems to be an issue with the Wordpress MYSQL database, rather than the whole acepilots.com domain. Addressing that might involve restarting http and mysql. I’m a bit out of my depth here, and tech support is … what I might call .. incrementally helpful. I’m sure I’ll figure […]
I have been working with some Wordpress blog tools recently: the theme and various plug-ins. I invite comments on useability from readers or any thoughts from other bloggers.
I’m using the blog.txt theme. The idea is clean … clean … clean. Any problems with rendering the two column format? Are both blogads […]
What is Web 2.0? : Gina Hughes
I had the same question when I first heard the term. To simplify things, Web 2.0 is what people consider “the second generation of services available on the World Wide Web that lets people collaborate and share information online“. Ok, I took those exact words from Wikipedia, which is […]
I am a plugin junkie. I confess. I need a 12-step program or something. Wordpress allows all these ‘plugins’ to be added, and hundreds more here. They do all sorts of neat stuff, including comment spam filters (Akismet and Spam Karma 2)
Here they are. I recommend all of them.

Good morning.
I recently changed my Wordpress theme to the minimalist blog.txt design. In addition to being very clean-looking, it permits the use of WP Widgets Plugin.
While these changes looked good, suddenly my highly effective spam filter, Spam Karma 2, is failing to stop a wave of comment spam. I don’t know if it’s coincidental […]
I have belatedly added a feature enabling HTML links (and other tags like bold {str} and italics {em} ) in the comments. They seem to work fine. I’d appreciate tests and reactions from my readers.
For other Wordpress bloggers, I am using this Comment Quicktags plugin.
My thanks to Joe (Bloodspite) at Techography for inspiring me […]
Remember the rule, “Never upgrade to version X.0 of anything?”
I broke it, and upgraded to WP 2.0. Silly me.
Of course, a few weeks later version 2.0.2 with important security upgrades was released.
That’s what I’m doing this morning. Testing stuff. Maybe I need this book:
Please leave a test comment, especially if you see anything […]
My blog was unavailable most of yesterday. My aplogies to my readers. My host, Lunarpages, suffered a power outage, with very bad consequences. Details at Lunarpages Forums.
agentbedhead.com - offers blog backup assistance
For every platform, a way exists to back up your posts. Even with Blogspot blogs this is true, though it was awfully crappy of them to not provide a visible method with which their users can backup their data. If you cannot figure out how to back up your blog, […]
Whatever: Writing Tips for Non-Writers Who Don’t Want to Work at Writing
So, the task here: Tell y’all how to write better without you actually having to make an effort. Fine. Here’s how I would do it.(NB: These work pretty well for people who do want to be pro writers, too.)
0. Speak what you write: This […]
TBogg - Bloggorhea
…or why Jeff Goldstein only has a writing gig at PeePee Pants Media, which ain’t no gig at all:
One of the benefits of an hysterical, adversarial, and sensationalist media is that, blessedly, its inevitable and predictable insistance on the implied importance of every al Qaeda missive as a nail in the US […]
Upgrading WordPress to 2.0
I upgraded today, apparently smoothly. Under dire threats from the developers, I dutifully backed up database and WP files.
The most time-consuming part was deleting the precise list of files and folders to be deleted and then uploading/overwriting with the upgraded files. On initial installation, I has simply uploaded the entire (zipped […]
Tim Worstall: Ann Althouse and BlogAds.
That’s 80 of the top traffic right wing blogs that a couple of weeks ago stopped taking BlogAds. But has there been a corresponding change, similar reduction, in the number of advertisers who want to use BlogAds? Certainly there is no evidence (as yet) that all of those advertisers are […]
