Department of Rejection and Denunciation

Ever heard of Louis Farrakhan? How about Jeremiah Wright, pastor of Obama’s Black Church? If so, you’ve probably also heard of demands that Obama distance himself from them, most recently Tim Russert’s lengthy Farrakhan farrago at the last debate, culminating in Obama’s formulation, “I reject and denounce” Farrakhan.

You might also have read that McCain recently won, and enthusiastically accepted, the endorsement of Rev. John Hagee, an evangelical preacher, who says stuff like:

TG: If you use the Bible as the basis for policy, is there any room for compromise? And if you use the bible as the basis for policy, should Muslims use the Koran as the basis for their policy, and then again, what possible basis is there for compromise at that point?

JH: There is really no room for compromise between radical Islam –

TG: I’m not talking about radical Islam. I’m just talking about Islam in general.

JH: Well Islam in general — those who live by the Koran have a scriptural mandate to kill Christians and Jews.

and this:

JH: All hurricanes are acts of God, because God controls the heavens. I believe that New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God, and they were recipients of the judgment of God for that.

The newspaper carried the story in our local area, that was not carried nationally, that there was to be a homosexual parade there on the Monday that the Katrina came.

and:

“the president’s support for Israel fulfills a biblical injunction to protect the Jewish state,” which “will play a pivotal role in the second coming.”

and, of course:

As millions of people anticipate the release of the latest Harry Potter book and film, we’re reminded once again of Satan’s ongoing attempt to deceive and destroy. The whole purpose of the Potter books is to desensitize readers and introduce them to the occult.

Just for fun, not that I expect it to happen, I call on John McCain to “reject and denounce” Rev. Hagee. No, I can go one better. I call on McCain to “reject, denounce, and disown” Hagee.

Hagee forgets that the brunt of Katrina was actually borne by Mississippi, and I kind of doubt they had a homosexual parade scheduled for that Monday.

By the way, am I the only who’s noticed that evangelical preachers spend a suspicious amount of time thinking about homosexuals?

And hardly any time thinking about eating lobsters, which is also described as an abomination in Leviticus.
But when I think about it, if they can’t scuba fish for lobsters, they need to find other uses for wetsuits, so it’s all starting to fall into place.

When you are as full of crazy ideas as Rev. Hagee it must be pretty difficult to decide which ones to emphasize.

There was a brilliant Stephen Colbert “This Week in God” bit on the conservative Christian interpretation that New Orleans was punished by God for hosting a gay pride parade.

He noted that Katrina wiped out the parts of New Orleans next to the area where the pride parade was held, but did relatively little damage to the area along the parade route, wryly commenting that God does not hate gays, but the “gay adjacent.”
