Slip, sliding away
2008 Democratic Convention Watch: Superdelegate History Tracker
Amidst all the posturing and table-pounding from the Obama camp, from the Clinton camp, from Donna Brazile, from Chris Bowers, and from bloggers about the role of superdelegates and what their true purpose is and whether or not they are obligated to reflect the will of the voters, etc. etc. … amidst all that, there hasn’t been much attention paid to the actual leanings of the superdelegates.
Short answer: Clinton’s lead is slipping badly. Last month, she had almost 100 more superdelegates “committed” to her than Obama had. Today, that lead is down to 70. The movement and switches in the past week or two have really picked up.
Longer answer: There is no “commitment” of superdelegates; by definition they are uncommitted. Of course, some of them will announce their leanings, and that’s what people report. But there is nothing legally or procedurally binding them to vote the way that they have announced.
What’s more, they are notoriously hard to keep track of, and (for whatever reason) most media source publish rather odd totals, based on a mix of public announcements, private assurances, and the reporters’ guesswork. Demconwatch, the linked site above, strictly tracks public announcements, and lists them, name by name. So their lists are constantly being revised and updated, but always in response to publicly reported source.
