Obama draws 11,000 in Birmingham
Obama exhorts crowd to change America - Breaking News from The Birmingham News
In an event that was part rock concert, part church revival, Sen. Barack Obama today brought an overflow crowd of 11,000-plus emotional supporters to their feet at UAB’s Bartow Arena, telling them the time to change America has come.
“There is nothing we cannot do if the American people decide it is time,” Obama told the crowd. “There is a moment in the life of every generation, if it is to make its mark on history, it’s spirit has to come through. This is our moment.
“This is our time. And, if you’ll willing to stand with us, and if you’re willing to march with me, and organize with me and vote for me, I promise you we will not just win the nomination, we will win the general election and you and I together will transform this country and we will transform the world,” Obama said, bringing the crowd to its feet in shattering applause and shouts of “Obama! Obama! Obama!”
After the Illinois senator had finished his hour-plus speech, he spent another 15 minutes working the large crowd, shaking hand after hand as a throng of supporters pushed closer, many just trying to touch him.
That’s a lot of people, just to see a politician.
