Commie, could you elaborate? which twelve year olds have been attacked? In what way and by whom? Is there a linked to story I missing here?
Graeme Frost is a 12-year-old living in Baltimore who was helped through SCHIP (State Children’s Health Insurance Program). He appeared in a TV announcement saying that the program had helped him (which it had). Some of the Right wing went bonkers, started stalking the family, calling them personally, etc., all to “prove” that the family didn’t qualify for SCHIP. Of course they did, but that didn’t even slow down the likes of Michelle Malkin. It’s been in the news quite a bit now, on blogs even more so.
I used to enjoy this site as it made some good points about the republican drift, including their ridiculous spending. Lately it seems you just regurgitate Kos/DNC talking points.
The “stalking” consisted of finding info on the internet about the family’s (not insubstantial) assets. Malkin went to the father’s commercial building, and spoke with one of his tenants as the father wasn’t there. She then drove down the public street in front of the family’s home so she could see it, rather than relying on comp sales prices in the neighborhood.
Oh, and the family already qualifies under SCHIP’s current rules. Is it not germane to point out the program already covers people that aren’t really “poor”, and that expanding it will include even more such people?
The Frost family’s assets are irrelevant. The point is that they spoke up in favour of a program that the Leader wanted to restrict, and had to be punished so that other people would know what to expect if they spoke up. How many right wing goons rationalized the noise by saying the Democrats should have expected to have the 12 year old boy harassed if they used him as a spokesperson? As if speaking in favour of legislation is some kind of heinious crime? If you don’t like the legislation, write to your congressman, or film a commercial stating your objections. Don’t harass some kid with phone calls and emails and anonymous interviews with the neighbours and photos of their “granite” countertops. It makes you look like… thugs.
The Republicans didn’t attack a 12-year-old. They attacked liberals for feeding political propaganda to children and manipulating those children into serving as mouthpieces for said propaganda.
And this 12-year-old isn’t the first. Michelle Malkin mentions several such instances - see page 2 of this article:

On the S-CHIP program in general, do we really need welfare for the upper middle class?
“The Frost family’s assets are irrelevant”
They have more than me, they live better than me, but because they choose to spend their money on things other than health insurance my taxes should pay their bills?
I am forced to take part of my compensation as health insurance - I don’t have the choice to spend it on private schools or nice cars.
Holy ****, do I have to take on the stupid here?
1) They aren’t rich, or even upper middle class, unless you live in a trailer park. $45K/yr income, part time and self-employment, and whatever equity is on their house. Are you seriously saying that they deserve to lose their home to cope with a medical disaster? Is that the Compassionate part of Compassionate Conservatism?
2) The kid was manipulated? For saying “I was hurt and this program helped me”?
3) If the Frosts made bad choices, are you saying that disqualifies them from a government program they were qualified for? Not only means tests, but “deserves” tests which you can only pass if you never made a bad choice in your life? And the kids don’t deserve life-saving care because their parents made “bad choices”?
4) Your country is turning into a shithole. Part of the reason is that you people can’t handle dissent without others turning to vicious partisan smears. Leave the kid and his family alone. You don’t have to harass them for exercising free speech.
5) If you’re so concerned about your tax dollars, why not ask about the billions of unaccounted funds that have just vanished into Iraq?
Hey, speaking of Michelle Malkin, when is she going to debate Ezra Klein on this issue she cares so much about? She isn’t… chicken, is she?
BAWK-BAWK-BAKAW!
All that talk about reasoned discourse, and she runs like the French Army when she gets the chance.*
* I know, but I wanted a slam the the wingnuts would feel.
1) I shoud have specified that was talking about the proposed S-CHIP expansion, not the Frosts. As stated by Mr. Rush, “The Democrats want to increase coverage to “children” up to age 25, with family of four income levels at $83,000.”
http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_101207/content/01125113.guest.html
2) The lie that Frost was fed was that the S-CHIP expansion would go to needy children, and ONLY to children.
In many states, S-CHIP goes to adults.
http://www.heritage.org/Research/HealthCare/wm1381.cfm
3) Would the Frosts be a two-property, three-car family if S-CHIP didn’t exist? (Why does a family need three cars, anyway?)
4) WE can’t handle dissent??????? The response to the Frost broadcast IS DISSENT!!!
5) I would ask if I knew about it. (Googling) Ah, CNN story:
http://edition.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/meast/01/30/iraq.audit/
I’m not at all surprised to see this happen in a Third World war zone. But Iraq budget issues are irrelevant to this topic. There are zillions of places where federal budgeting needs improvement. S-CHIP hapens to be the topic of this thread, not Iraq spending or Medicare fraud or the IRS losing laptops.
The use of the Frosts in the political broadcast doesn’t even make sense to me. The Frosts are covered by S-CHIP whether the expansion is vetoed or not. If the Dems wanted to make a better propaganda ploy, they’d find someone who *doesn’t* currently qualify for S-CHIP who encountered some nasty medical bills.
To be entitled… Or not to be entitled, that is the Question!
Thanks for filling me in Gentlemen.
Canuckistani,
A little tense on this threat are we? Hey, not all of us Yanks are sold on free health care for all. Also, the Dems are always pulling the “Its for the children” bit which makes the conservatives, like me, a little cynical when it comes to these kind of adds. After all when a Liberal says,”It is for the children” every one else needs to check and see if their wallet is still there. Nice dig on the French Army, picking on the frogs is always a winner with me.
Well, if you have problems with public health care (or socialized medicine, to use it’s boogeyman name), that’s cool with me. That’s one of the advantages that keep businesses up here in Canada, where they don’t have to cover basic health for their employees. And I can tell you that the care we get is much better than anything I could afford, and I don’t have to fight to squeeze money out of insurance provider. Now, if you have problems with expanding the program so that more kids are covered, even kids whose parents have made bad choices, that’s also cool with me. If you don’t want to cover 23 years old college students listed as dependants on their parents taxes, that’s something I disagree with, but we could have a grown up discussion about it.
But if your argument depends on taking some kid who spoke in favour of the program and looking through his windows at his family’s kitchen, or counting the cars parked out front, or asking the neighbours to rat them out, then my hackles go up. I loathe snoops and snitches and authoritarian goons who demand IRS audits of people who disagree with them.I loathe anyone who would publicize the names and addresses of people they have decided are the enemy.
And because I have a flawed personality, I am trembling with joy at the spectacle of Michelle Malkin going down in flames of humiliation. She’s a laughing stock for everyone to the left of Mussolini.
Also, the Dems are always pulling the “Its for the children” bit which makes the conservatives, like me, a little cynical when it comes to these kind of adds.
No sane person over the age of 8 takes politicians at their word. But not everything government does is bad or wrong*. I wouldn’t shake hands with a car salesman without three rubber gloves, but you can still buy a decent car.
*at least not up here
The Dems are downright devious and wholly dishonest with this attempt to expand Government Health Care. Exploiting little kids, making them deceive the public, despicable.
