TPMmuckraker: It’s the Program, Stupid

The late-night drama makes for an interesting news story, but it’s really beside the point. The punchline here is that the President of the United States engaged in a prolonged and willful effort to violate the law, until senior members of his own administration forced him to stop. That’s the Congressional investigation that we ought to be having.

The NSA wiretapping story struck me as a snooze. But what Marshall and others are saying about Comey’s “Ashcroft in the hospital” story shows a much bigger picture.

It is a continuing affront to the rule of law in this country that an odious legal lickspittle like Gonzo is our AG. Coming on top of his shameless “I can’t remember, I don’t recall” charade in the congressional hearings, his role in the Comey/Ashcroft bedside story is beyond nauseating. It is a direct reflection on Bush, who for my money isn’t now just hopelessly stupid, but also a complete scumbag for tolerating, indeed encouraging such tactics.

Sorry for the rant, but as a lawyer this stuff really gets to me. It’s not the way things are supposed to happen in our country.
