CFL Member Stats for Instapundit - Greenhouse Gas Emission and Cost Savings - One Billion Bulbs

This is a neat idea, tracking purchases of CFL’s and estimating the savings. My info, under “Stephen S., NY” is surely conservative, I entered 40 bulbs replaced, averaging 60 watts each, replaced with 20 watt CFLs. I used the default assumption of 4 hours per day.

I wouldn’t say that Glenn Reynolds inspired me to buy CFLs, but he’s promoting it, and I’ve read a lot about them on his blog, so I’m glad to join his group. If any members of the Politburo have purchased any CFLs, please enter them in the Instapundit group of One Billion Bulbs.

You’d do a lot better to use WLEDs. They are far lower consumption (more efficient), and are likely to outlast you.

You also need to consider the hidden cost of the light bulb as well; the amount of energy that goes into the construction of a flourescent bulb, and the mining and disposal of the materials (especially mercury) that go into it.
That having been said, we use compact flourescents in any fixtures where light colour is not an issue, or where the temperature doesn’t drop below zero.

The color issue regarding CFLs intrigues me. I have found that the ones labeled “warm, yellow light” (or something similar) to be indistinguishable from incandescents, even in a side-by-side test, using two identical lamps.
