The weeds of Purgegate are tangled almost beyond description. But I’ll give this one (in the link above) a try.

The removal of USA Cummins, to be replaced by Griffin, “was important to Rove.” (That’s what Sampson wrote in an email in December.)

On February 23, a DOJ official (Hertling) wrote Congress, “The Department is not aware of Karl Rove playing any role in the decision to appoint Mr. Griffin.”

Sampson helped draft that letter. And (this is the good part), he obtained White House approval for that version of the letter.

In short, Rove signed off on covering-up his own involvement. Kyle Sampson will have a lot of explaining to do about this tomorrow.

What bothers me is this whole thing has been one bad lie after another. They should have just said we can fire and hire these people at will - Just like other Presidents have! All the lies Alberto and his subordinates have told the last several weeks makes it look very bad. Maybe it is but I think not. The lies are however very bad. This will hurt the GOP in 08; just like DeLay did in 06.

    Rod,

They didn’t lie for no good reason. Contrary to Leftie BDS ravings like “Rethuglicans lie because they breathe.”

They lied to obscure the real reasons for the firings. “We fired 8 USA’s midterm … ah … well … because we felt like it.” would not have flown. The real reasons were worth lying about.

They should have just said we can fire and hire these people at will

Tellingly, Margaret Chiara, one of the 8 fired USAs, and concerned for her career, emailed back, asking the DOJ guys to put it that way. She wrote, “Why this ‘poor performance’ stuff? Just say I serve at the President’s pleasure.” And the DOJ guy replied, “Sorry, can’t do that.”

IOW, they consciously and specifically rejected your suggested approach, Rod.

And their stupidity is being punished - as it should!
BTW I was wrong about Kyl he squaked and squaked. What he said that was helpful is ignored but what he said that shows Gonzo to be a dishonest man was broadcast far and wide.
Bush should have fired Alberto weeks ago. Gonzo is a bad lier. Too many of his lies are disproved too quickly. The longer Bush keeps him the more the GOP is hurt in 08. It is almost like Bush is a Dem “fifth columnist”! He worked hard to lose both houses from 05 to 06 and now seems to be working hard to help Billary win in 08!@?!@#!
