“But what if I need it sometime?”

Iraq Troop Boost Erodes Readiness, General Says

Outgoing Army Chief of Staff Gen. Peter J. Schoomaker said yesterday that the increase of 17,500 Army combat troops in Iraq represents only the “tip of the iceberg” and will potentially require thousands of additional support troops and trainers, as well as equipment — further eroding the Army’s readiness to respond to other world contingencies.

I guess that the context and the thrust of the general’s remarks did not come across. As an argument against Bush’s escalation in Iraq, the idea that using troops for it will “erode our readiness to meet other contingencies” is pretty stupid. I am no fan of the “surge.” But we have a military so that we can use it, as Madeleine Albright noted a few years ago.

Sometimes when I am fixing something around the house, I might need a 2×4. But, when rummaging around the basement, if find one, exactly what I am looking for, I catch myself saying “But what if I need it sometime?” … Then I whack myself on the head with the 2×4, and go ahead and use it.

The escalation might be a good or bad idea, but to oppose it because we might face some other contingency seems pretty weak.

MB @ BBWW directed me here… excellent work, and in this case concise and to the point. Strunk would be proud =,-)

The problem that the Pentagon sees, that the MSM doesn’t, is that we likely WILL need those troops - for Iran and/or North Korea (assuming, of course, that Bush doesn’t have strategic weapons queued up for those two instead). Sending them into the Iraq theatre bogs them down and keeps them from being available for those campaigns. Not even the Post seems willing to make that jump yet.

Like I said, these folks see the military as a huge WPA program. I remember back in the 80s when we used to plan to fight three wars at the same time. I guess we’ve downsized since then. Thanks, Bush sr. and Billy boy.

Sorry Commissar, I don’t think you’re metaphor holds up. If you use that 2×4 and next week your porch starts to wobble, you drive down to the local hardware store and pick up some more wood. But Home Depot doesn’t keep combat ready infantry brigades on the shelf beside the crescent wrenches. They are special order only, and take years to deliver.

    Canuck,

While trips to the hardware store can be a major event for me, you make a good point.
