Becks Coming to America
Beckham bends to siren song of L.A.
Former England captain David Beckham will leave his Spanish club at the end of the season and sign a landmark five-year deal worth US$250-million to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy.
His agreement with Real Madrid expires on June 30 and he’ll play in U.S. Major League Soccer from August, in a move observers hope will raise the status of soccer in the United States from niche to mainstream.
His deal is reported to be one of the biggest in global sport with Mr. Beckham, 31, set to earn about US$1-million a week; it comes as the MLS eases its rules governing salary caps in a bid to lure marquee names.
I went to quite a few MLS soccer games at Giants Stadium a few years ago, but not since the local New York team was sold and renamed the Red Bulls. I’ll be sure to be there when Becks and the Galaxy play.
