Hospi-blogging

I am in the waiting area of Sloan-Kettering Memorial, as Elaine is being operated on for the tumor on her thigh. While we had to endure a four-hour delay for her to be taken into the OR, this is a very well-organized, professional hospital. Early this morning we showed up (on schedule!) to admissions, which looked more like a private bank than a hospital. In wood-panelled surroundings, with subtle lighting and in general quiet, the “surgical concierge” took Elaine’s information and outlined the process for the day. She sat behind a marble counter with a painting of a birch tree behind her. Not all hospital like, no linoleum, no jarring noise, no gurneys screeching by .. I was hope to catch a glimpse of Joe Lieberman, forcibly dumped a rape victim into the East River .. but no such luck. All was quiet and re-assuring.

After not too long, we then moved into the PSC, Pre-Surgical Center, an actual medical environment, where Elaine got into her hospital gown and a nurse checked her vitals. After a few hours in there, and orderly appeared and summoned her to OR. Me? I was banished to the surgical waiting area. I am sitting in a comfy chair overlooking York Avenue, awaiting my page.

Update:
All went well. They removed the whole tumor, “softball size.” Elaine is recovering well and can eat real food already. I’m home and kinda beat. Thanks for the kind comments.

Thinking good thoughts for both of you: a quick, comfortable recovery from surgery, and relief from worry. Here’s to skilled surgeons and “good margins.”
