My thanks to Rachel Sawyer, Barry Campbell, j.d. at evolution, and Bloodspite at Technography.

They did a great job, filling in while I relaxed up at Saranac Lake. Thanks, guys. I greatly appreciate it, and will fill in for you when needed.

I try to avoid the blogging navel-gazing, but hope my readers will let me indulge in a little here. The developments (or lack of developments) in Iraq have given me serious pause. Quite literally I don’t know what to say. Blogging is largely about telling others what you think is important or interesting, but right now I find myself in a mood to “learn more and say less.”

Returning to a desk full of work is also a demand on my time.

Most importantly, my wife is going in for surgery on Friday, to have a malignant tumor on her thigh removed. It is not deep; the surgeon said “we’re talking about a cure, not merely controlling it;” and we are very very optimistic about the outcome. Nonetheless, cancer is a very serious, very consuming situtation, and obviously, that will be my family’s priority for the next few weeks or months.

But TPD remains open. I’ll be blogging to some extent. Barry and Rachel have agreed to post some now and then.

My wife went through cancer five years ago, and is still alive and kicking, thanks to the amazing abilities of modern medical science. Cancer will be the looming terror in your lives for some time to come, but really, don’t panic. If you’re like us, every time there’s a bump, a pain or a twinge, you’ll wonder. But these are all things that happened everyday before, and you didn’t think twice about them. By all means, take things seriously, but don’t panic. Good luck to you and your wife. It sounds like things should be ok.

“j.d., however, has been banished to a Vladivostok fishing-research post for his radical counter-revolutionary positions.”

:) Just kidding. I have been going through something of my own funk, for much less serious reasons, of course.

Best wishes to Mrs. C. and I hope she has a speedy recovery.
