nota bene II

[by j.d.]

This is a bit of a follow-up to Barry’s earlier post on notebooks. He mentions his preference for Moleskines.

I’ve been around enough art supplies, pens, and paper types to have tried several dozen different combinations. I’m kind of partial to the Pilot “Better Retractable” and the cheap notebook.

Pilot has been making this pen for probably two decades. Not many places carry them any more, but I’ll drive out of my way to get them. I have a large collection of notebooks, none of which were more expensive than $3. I have to carry the notebooks around, yes — this is Kansas, and men don’t carry bags in Kansas — but I don’t care. I cranked out 900 pages of a diary collection that way (which I’ve started calling my “analog blog”, which sounds to Kansans a lot less like a man carrying a bag) and two poetry collections over a period of ten years. There are dozens of other little poems, short stories, story stubs, and crazier things in them too. (I call these my “lost” works.)

I really abuse notebooks, and I’ve always been afraid to tear up something like Moleskines. Don’t get me wrong — I appreciate fine writing equipment. I used to get Levenger catalogs all the time (which is enough to get you put on a law enforcement watchlist in this state). But I go back to cheap equipment every time.

Hey, I spend a fair bit of time in Kansas and Missouri, and I carry my bag everywhere I go. :-)

Leawood and Overland Park probably don’t count, though.
