[…] UPDATE: The Commissar is thinking graphically. […]
[…] UPDATE: The Commissar has a graphical “web of connections” between Democrats and McCarthy. It reminds me of another “web of connections” I once saw, with two differences: 1) the other “web of connections” purported to show Swift Vet ties to Republicans, and 2) it didn’t appear on some conservative blog, but in the New York Times. If you’re familiar with the game “6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon” you’ll know what I mean with the above post title.

[…] This is outrageous. The L.A. Times continues to hide from its readers what media critic Howard Kurtz has called “absolutely relevant information” about Mary McCarthy: her web of connections to prominent Democrats, including sizeable monetary contributions. This, despite the fact that the paper considered analogous information, regarding prominent Swift Vet John O’Neill’s contributions to Republicans, to be worth its own story. What’s worse, today’s story positively seeks to portray her as a pure creature of conscience (my emphasis): Former colleagues described her as cautious and respected. “I thought she was a competent, quiet, good intelligence officer,” said Richard J. Kerr, a former deputy CIA director who worked with McCarthy. “She was certainly someone you had respect for and saw not as an ideologue or someone who would end up putting herself in this position.” […]
[…] Lots of good stuff in blogosphere on Mary McCarthy. Kitty Litter has a great round up overall. Mind In The Qatar has a great diagram showing all the ties McCarthy has to key Democrats, scandal figures and the media. So does The Commissar. Hopefully these diagrams will help guide the poor misguided media to report accurately. Just keep following the links as the spread through a very focused and energized blogosphere. […]

[…] P.S. The L.A. Times still isn’t reporting anything of the partisan ties of either woman. There are no new stories about Mary McCarthy since their last deceptive bilge, which implied that she is nonpartisan (by repeating quotes asserting that she is not an “ideologue”), while failing to report the evidence that she is indeed very much a Democrat partisan. You still pretty much have to be in tune with the blogosphere to know about McCarthy’s extensive Democrat partisan ties. […]
[…] As is generally the case when a cabal of old guard intelligence agents and diplomats attempt to execute a bloodless coup against a sitting president, there are likely to be a series of connections between their Democrat-donating carcasses. Fortunately, a few of us "Reichwingers" decided to plot out the connections in visual fashions: Mind in the Qatar has a matrix, while the Commisar has a nice flowchart to show for his efforts and Sweetness and Light has a helpful matrix and flowchart, complete with headshots! Nice. If it only it were a web of connections linking her to Republicans, it could be in the NY Times.
You might also like to add this June 14, 2003 EPIC speech including Wilson and McGovern… that is BEFORE Wilson’s OP-ED (July 14th, 2003)
(also, up until early this year Wilson’s online EPIC bio included “and his wife Valerie Plame “—- BUT has since been scrubbed — I have a screen shot though)
I rather admire the delicate way you reference Beers & Clarke’s “close association.”
I believe they were last spied together buying matching caldelabras at the Liberace Museum. Deep cover assignment, natch.
So, um, now that even the government is saying Mary McCarthy is NOT the source for Dana Priest’s reporting, how does this graphic work again?
(ed. note - The ‘Lex’ commenting here is not regular commenter “Neptunus Lex.”)
Hey, Lex. Do you don’t trust the government? Or, do you trust the papers? Hhmmm… Tough call. At any rate. I say,”swing the Liberal for GP and call it a day”.
“Do you don’t trust the government?” O.K. this is a retarded statement.
Correction:
Do you trust the government?
Sorry, about the brain ****.
Okay, I’m not getting this. Let me articulate my problems in an orderly fashion.
First, I’m not sure that I see the relevance of this ‘matrix’ in any but the most ‘tinfoil hat’ sense. My understanding of the Mary McCarthy situation is that she was fired from the CIA by Porter Goss. The original reason for firing was suggested to be her leaking the reports of CIA secret prisons. This has turned out to be inaccurate. It is not clear at this point why she was fired, or whether there was any justification for the termination.
Second, I would express the view that if she was fired for simply having connections to Democrats, then that was not a proper reason, any more than it would have been a proper reason to fire her based on the colour of her skin or the particular church she attends. If the United States government is getting into the business of political purges, then freedom and democracy is in trouble in America. To the extent that the ‘matrix’ leaves us with the suggestion that she was, or should be, fired for her associations with Democrats… well, I think that’s a very dangerous message.
Third, I think that comparisons to the Swift Boat nutboys are ill founded. The Swift Boat group was a political operation which came together during an election campaign, specifically to influence the outcome of that election campaign, and who sought out and publicly engaged media. In that front, their political connections were part and parcel of their activities and was fair game for public examination. In this case, we’re dealing with a private employment matter, Mary McCarthy was not seeking out media attention or engaging the media, this was not occurring during an election campaign and is not directed at altering an election outcome.
Fourth, it may be that there is an allegation that McCarthy compromised her work for the CIA to provide confidential information to Democrats or acted in a partisan manner which undermined the integrity of her work, and thus, the Democratic connections are relevant to both investigation, public scrutiny and her termination. Unfortunately, that allegation has not been made and so far as I know, there is no evidence whatsoever to support it. Given that, I have to wonder what the hell the matrix is on about, apart from ‘tinfoil hat’ chocolate n’ nutty goodness.
Finally, I have a real issue with the methodological approach taken here. As someone else pointed out, the game of ‘Six Degrees of Separation’ proves you can link just about anyone to Kevin Bacon. So in this case, we’re playing another game of ‘Six degrees’ linking McCarthy to Bill Clinton or John Kerry. Is there a point? Or is it just nonsense? And more to the point, is it possible to play the same game linking McCarthy to Republicans? And if it is, then is it all just ’snow’, essentially meaningless random data which is cherry picked to produce a pattern that justifies some allegation or other?
Anyway, that’s my take on it.
The original reason for firing was suggested to be her leaking the reports of CIA secret prisons. This has turned out to be inaccurate. It is not clear at this point why she was fired, or whether there was any justification for the termination.
What part of ***failed polygraphs*** don’t you get?
Lex, Den Valdron,
per today’s NY Times:
The CIA defended the firing of Mary O. McCarthy, … and challenged her lawyer’s statements that Ms. McCarthy never provided classified information to the news media.
But intelligence officials would not say whether they believed that Ms. McCarthy had been a source for … the Washington Post [stories] about secret C.I.A. detention centers abroad. Media accounts have linked Ms. McCarthy’s firing to the articles, but the C.I.A. has never explicitly drawn such a connection.
In response to questions Tuesday, the intelligence officials declined to say whether discussion of the prisons had been part of what they described as a pattern of unauthorized contacts between Ms. McCarthy and reporters.
“would not say” … “declined to say” …
Quiz for 6th Grade Lefties: Do the following two sentences mean the same thing? Why or why not?
1) Joe would not say if Mary did it.
2) Joe denied that Mary did it.
also in the article:
A C.I.A. spokeswoman, Jennifer Millerwise Dyck, said: “The officer was terminated for precisely the reasons we have given: unauthorized contacts with reporters and sharing classified information with reporters. There is no question whatsoever that the officer did both. The officer personally admitted doing both.”
But, in Den Valdron’s world:
Mary McCarthy was not … engaging the media, this was not occurring during an election campaign and is not directed at altering an election outcome.
Being omniscient is good.
It’s a good thing that CIA Director Porter Goss doesn’t have any political connections and hasn’t ever served as a Republican in the U.S. Congress.
It’s funny how you Bush sycophants can engage in all kinds of mental gymnastics to protect your boy Bush from legitimate criticism. And I thought you guys claimed to hate “moral relativism.” Sheesh.
Commissar: Fair enough. But “Joe would not say if Mary did it” ALSO != “Joe said Mary did it.”
But the latter is what your graphic implies.
Also, just fyi, I’m a middle-aged, Red State Republican. It’s only my sense of humor that’s sixth-grade.
The facts and unknowns:
1. McCarthy was fired from her job with the CIA, an agency of our government for forbidden possibly illegal activities i.e. From the CIA, “The officer was terminated for precisely the reasons we have given: unauthorized contacts with reporters and sharing classified information with reporters. There is no question whatsoever that the officer did both. The officer personally admitted doing both.”
2. McCarthy did not act alone having conspired to give information to unknown reporters who by accepting the information and then reporting on it became accomplices. Re: see above CIA statement.
3. McCarthy was either acting on her own (I find that a little hard to believe but it is a possibility) or there were others assisting and/or directing her. If they exist, they also would be accomplices.
4. Why did McCarthy risk her job and reputation to do this work? Is she a fanatic or was there some given and/or promised reward?
A ‘bakers’ dozen traitors. One leader and 12 lackies would be about right. Anymore involved in the plot and word would surely leak out.
THere should be a line (maybe dotted) from Joe Wilson and Sandy Burgler to Kerry since they both worked on his campain until they skulked away after being outed as liars and thieves.
