Don’t Click Through #532

MVRWC - Reason #532 why Typepad/Six Apart SUCKS

When you move off Typepad to your own domain, they will turn around and give your old blog URL to someone else. ANYONE ELSE.

Case in point: Merri Musings. Merri used to be on Typepad, but not long ago (wisely) moved to mu.nu. Wanna see who’s got her old URL?

Do not click on the link to Beth’s blog, and then do not click on Merri’s old URL.

It’s hard not to laugh, but it is an outrage.

Update: Anil Dash responds, and asks a good question, “What is Typepad supposed to do?”

    Hi, I work with Six Apart and with the TypePad team, and I wanted to get your feedback — what do you think is the right thing for us to do when someone has stopped subscribing to the service? If someone lets a domain name expire, anyone can grab it afterwards, and the same is true for blogs, basically. If you let acepilots.com expire and someone else could grab it, is that an outrage as well? I would like to help figure out a policy we could enforce that would be consistent and sensible, so any ideas you can share would be great.

    I suggest sticking to your TOS.

    Unless of course you think that your TOS is just a malarkey and your offering to people to sell websites because they think they are hosting with a company that is straightlaced and going to protect their kids from viewing something in a responsible manner.

    (a) upload, post, transmit or otherwise make available any Content that is unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, tortuous, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, libelous, invasive of another’s privacy (up to, but not excluding any address, email, phone number, or any other contact information without the written consent of the owner of such information), hateful, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable;

    Fortunately I’m not a MT, Typead or any of that garbage and own my own domain so I don’t have to deal with any of that tripe.

    But if you publish a TOS, as someone who has been threatened with a lawsuit recently I strongly suggest you adhere to it.

    Unless your going to try to say that someone going in to great deal of detail regarding sexual intercourse with a strap on complete with pictures is not vulgar or obscene.

    Oh wait…thats right…it’s “art” isn’t it?
    Silly me.
