Approval Ratings and Midterm Elections

Cold Hearted Truth looks at the numbers.

Approval Ratings and Midterm Success

A Gallup news release today includes a table comparing the approval ratings of the president, congress, and the change in the number of seats in the House in midterm elections going back to 1974. The data indicate there is a stronger correlation between the presdient’s approval rating and the fortunes of his party’s House members than there is between Congress’ approval rating and the fortunes of the party which controls the House.

So, C.H. Truth worked out the correlations, which (using just this indicator) imply big problems for the GOP in the 2006 House elections.

For the way they spend money alone, the Repubs deserve to lose, but they’re running against Democrats. Look for them to pick up a seat or two in both houses.
