UN envoy alarmed at Cuba jail allegations

A special U.N. rights envoy expressed alarm on Tuesday at allegations of ill treatment in Cuban jails, but said that a U.S. economic embargo was hampering attempts to improve Cuba’s respect for political rights.
“The extreme tension between Cuba and the United States has created a climate which is far from conducive to the development of freedom of expression and freedom of assembly,” French magistrate Christine Chanet said.

Repression in Cuba is America’s fault.

Well, since the French don’t have Saddam to play with anymore now they’re going to suck up Fidel Castro. This Magistrate gets the “Stupid Award” for the most feckless disregard of reality in 2006.

Had this article come from the Onion it would have been hilarious. As it represents what may be a widely held opinion, it’s nothing but sad.
