What I find that is amazing is that most people don't know that there are port police, customs, and coast gaurd that do security at the ports. The companies leasing and running the docks are required to participate.

Last nite I caught a segment on Hannity and Colmes where Colmes interviewed a port police commander and got the cooks tour of some of the container checkout and exit security. It proved the point when he was asked by Colmes what would be the changes if the UAE were to lease the port -- nothing was the answer.

The port police are the ones with the guns :-)

It proved the point when he was asked by Colmes what would be the changes if the UAE were to lease the port — nothing was the answer.

WSJ:

At least one of the ports where DP World is set to operate, Baltimore, has been dogged by security shortcomings for years. A Baltimore Sun investigation in June 2005 revealed that the port's fiber-optic alarm system on the perimeter fence malfunctioned and was usually switched off, and that port police were so understaffed that their patrol boats often dry-docked because there was no one to operate them. The newspaper also found that a pair of "video cameras" guarding the entrance to one important marine terminal were actually blocks of wood on poles.

Last summer, a tour of the port, the nation's eighth largest, revealed gaps in perimeter fences, unattended gates, surveillances systems that didn't work and insufficient police patrols on land and sea. State officials have acknowledged security gaps and said they have been working to close them.

Can't even believe this Dubai thing is being debated.

I have a niece who was being recruited by the CIA several years ago. Passed everything A-OK except.... she was engaged to the son of the German ambassador. She was ruled NOT eligible for the job! (Might give away US secrets... hah!)

The UAE, is a self-proclaimed Arab nation, and the port issue is NOT JUST about business... it IS ALSO ABOUT ABOUT RELIGION! Fanatical Muslim Arabs will use whatever opening they can get, by threatening (or promising to reward) a family member of a port worker. I am SURE some of the people working in these ports have family (sisters, cousins, uncles, etc.) in an Arab nation, making this very easy to do. And their sense of loyalty and honor are far different than ours. They are willing to DIE for theirs!

Remember, our own CIA didn't want "mixed marriages" for their employees because of the percieved risk.

Lastly, this is crazy simply BECAUSE the UAE DOES CONTROL so many port operations around the world. The paperwork, and the container, can be "fixed" 2 or 3 ports away, so by the time it gets to a US port the paperwork might say Britain when it actually started in Iran. And who's going to inspect a container from Britain?

All it takes is one surprize package!
