Election Gripes
The recent election in Iraq has prompted some complaints from the losers, despite UN findings. Perhaps this tactic reflects a Middle Eastern “bazaar mentality” where everything is haggled, even after the fact, and also a cultural unfamiliarity with elections and accepting their results.
“We have found numerous, serious election irregularities in the … election.” *
“The votes were not, under all known circumstances, regularly given.” *
“Don’t tell us disenfranchising a million … and stealing their votes is the best we can do.” *
“Serious problems surfaced in this election that must be addressed.” *
“Why were there thousands of provisional ballots disqualified after poll workers gave faulty instructions to voters?” *
“[We must] cast the light of truth on a flawed system which must be fixed now.” *
“I’ve heard all sorts of witnesses, many of whom were convinced of fraud and conspiracy,”*
“We have found numerous, serious election irregularities . . . which resulted in a significant disenfranchisement of voters. . . . In many cases these irregularities were caused by intentional misconduct and illegal behavior.” *
Yes, that must be it. These complaints must stem from a dysfunctional, politically immature culture.
