The ‘A Christmas Story’ Story

Don Surber: “You’ll Shoot Your Eye Out”

Sometime this evening, my wife will return home from work, turn on the TV, and for the next 24 hours or so, members of the Surber household will occasionally cast an eye on Ralphie Parker’s pursuit of an Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle.

We know the lines by heart.

Ralphie pursues his dream even as adults tell him eleventy hundred times: “You’ll shoot your eye out.”

Us too. After twentry years, “It’s a Wonderful Life” has been replaced by “A Christmas Story” as the must-see, re-run on television a zillion times, but you’ve got to see it anyway, not a success in original release, lovable family Christmas movie.

My favorite scene? The Scott Farkas Affair.

Don Surber has the whole story.

Thanks for the plug. The leg lamp this year is my third best Christmas gift ever, after Operation Moonbase (1963) and a son (three days before Christmas 1983)
