Oppression of the Couch Potatoes
The mandatory switch from analog to digital television broadcasts has been delayed a few times, with current policy calling for a switchover at the end of 2006. It’s been clear for some time that the 2006 date wasn’t going to happen, and now Congress has made it official. The new date is February 17, 2009.
Why is Congress interested in pushing broadcasters off the analog television spectrum? (I’ll give you a hint: it’s not because they want you to watch CSI: Naperville in pristine digital quality.) Two reasons: money and firefighters. The money part is obvious enough—the government hopes to raise massive amounts of cash (on the order of US$5 billion to US$10 billion) from the sale of the newly-freed spectrum.
Of course, this is merely a scam perpetuated by the Bushie Neocons to oppress the people, forcing them to buy $500 TV sets, just to fund tax cuts for the rich.
