What if they held an election
… and no Leftie bloggers mentioned it?
You would not know from reading AMERICABlog, dKos, Atrios, TalkLeft, TBogg, Bitch Phd, Mustang Bobby, Talking Points Memo, firedoglake, pandagon, Left Coaster, Brad deLong, or (surprisingly) Kevin Drum* that there is an election being held in Iraq today. It seems to be going quite well, with a large Sunni turnout and not much violence.
This is not a cherry-picked list. It’s just the Lefties I have on my blogroll and Bloglines account. Also Pharyngula, Rox Populi, Bull Moose, and 6th International are silent about the election, but such news from Iraq may fall out side of the normal blogging topics of this latter group. I’ll hold them harmless on this. (Rox notes in a comment that Typepad went down that day.)
I will update and even link to any Leftie blog reported to be covering this news, which is front-page on NYTimes and everywhere else. But NONE of these Lefties see fit to mention it? Res ipse loquitor.
Update (via Allah):
Oliver Willis: Great, the Iraqis had their election (after they essentially had to shut down the entire country again)… so can the troops come home now? Mission accomplished, and all that… (this is one of those Iraq Turning PointsTM) … Yeah, guess not.
Steve Gilliard: We’re Losing
jgrr, Thoughts from Kansas: … as polls close in Iraq, as men are being allowed to vote for their wives, as the death toll of Americans and Iraqis continues to spiral upward, as the insurgency shows no signs of abating …
Glenn Greenwald: … dreadfully predictable and self-congratulatory chest-beating war dances … a crazed and smug giddiness characteristic of a cheerleading squad for a triumphant college football team … poetic paeans to Purple Fingers which were so solemnly paraded around … gloating self-satisfaction,
Thanks: Oliver, Steve, jgrr, Glenn. You guys are great.
Jeff Goldstein put together a more comprehensive round-up of Leftie posts today. Go read that instead.
* I expect Kevin to have something reasonable and positive to say later on. (He did.) David Scott Anderson also notes the news with sincere best wishes for the Iraqi people. As does Mustang Bobby.
