Splinter of a Splinter

BBC NEWS - Trans-Dniester pins hopes on vote

How did I miss this? A region of Moldova split away 15 years ago. Now wait … Moldova … that’s a bit of Romania, or used to be. See here.

Romania and Moldova

It used to be called Bessarabia, one of those odd little chunks of Europe that have been attached to more than one country since World War One, like Ruthenia, formerly the Eastern tip of Czechoslovakia that was grafted onto the Ukraine after WW2 so that the Soviets could have direct, adjacent access to Czechoslovakia and Hungary.

So Moldova used to be part of Romania, before WW2.

But what is this Trans-Dniester?

See? That little narrow bit on the east side of the Dniester.

Moldova and Trans-Dniester

A splinter of a splinter. Maybe part of Trans-Dniester will secede from it.
