More than any other Allied bomber, the B-17 was the plane that carried the air war to Germany, bombing its war machine, its industrial capacity, and its cities. From 1939, over 12,700 'Forts' were built, most saw service with the Eighth Air Force. Flying in a tight defensive formation, near its top speed of 295 MPH, with twelve .50 caliber machine guns, Boeing's sturdy four-engine bombers remorselessly delivered their 8 ton bombloads.
